Gathering of the Clans & The Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band
The Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band was formed in 1909 by the Ipswich Caledonian Society with aims to encourage the music, customs and traditions of the great highland bagpipe. It was also to serve as a social organisation, and provide what would best be described as ‘a helping hand’ to migrating Scottish families.
Since this time the band has continued to embody these values as both a social band and in competitions, culminating in their win of at the New Zealand Championships in 2005. They have also toured extensively, travelling to France in 2006 for the Interceltique Festival de Lorient, the largest Celtic festival in the world, and to Russia in 2007 for the Moscow International Tattoo.
Under the guidance of Pipe Major Rod Smith and Drum Sergeant Fiona Brown, the band has re entered the competition scene, taking a respectable 13th place overall and winning the Grade 4 street march at the 2016 Australian Pipe Band Championships. With the creation of the Greater Ipswich College of Piping and Drumming, the band is taking steps to not only bolster its own numbers and sustain its longevity, but to provide a much greater access to learning pipes and drums for young children and strengthen the culture of pipe bands throughout South-East Queensland.
